Altenew Watercolor 36 Pan Set Release Blog Hop + Giveaway

Hello Friends, How’s your week been so far? One more day until the weekend. Yay!

I am super excited to welcome you to Altenew’s August Release Blog Hop!! It’s a happy day because I can share these 36 Pan Watercolors from Altenew! Yes please! But, wait there’s more in this release …watercolor brushes (fine, medium, large) and watercolor palettes (medium, large) plus promotions and giveways!! Let’s get started!

To start at the beginning of the hop go to the Altenew Card Blog. If you are arriving from  Lydia Fiedler ‘s blog you are in the right place. Lydia is the real deal and knows her stuff and she always makes me laugh. You will find the full hop list at the bottom of my post.

When I received the new watercolors I packed them and they went on a trip to Hawaii with me and I was able to mess around and play. I watercolored this “Peony Spray” and enjoyed painting the flowers just for the fun of it.

Here’s a little bit more about this beautiful set of 36 vibrant watercolor half-pans. It’s pretty awesome that they coordinate perfectly with the Altenew line of ink. They are intensely pigmented, fade minimally when drying, and some colors have lovely granulating effects. They are stored in a light weight plastic case, with space for your brush (included) and a palette in the lid for mixing. (Some of the case lids snap off upon opening and can easily snap back on after you are finished creating so you can store your mixed paints with the rest of the pan colors).

The most import part of these watercolor is that they fade minimally. Have you watercolored before and the colors are nice and vibrant and then it dries and the color is lost it’s vibrancy? That’s what I love about these the fade is minimal.

I love everything about this 36 pan set of watercolors and I have been enjoying traveling with them because they are not only pretty but, light, compact and the colors are vibrant and rich. For today’s post I decided to create an art piece for my guest bedroom instead of a card.

You can see my watercolor hanging on the wall in the guest bedroom with some of my daughters grade school art that I still treasure even tho she’s 23. I was lucky that I was able to repurpose a frame from about 20 years ago for my contribution to this wall collage. Have you made anything to decorate your walls? I highly recommend it and the extra time is so worth it. Watch the video to see my process.

Watercoloring something this large can be time consuming so I recommend doing it in stages so it can dry in between. When it was partially dry I would stick the painting under a heavy book to flatten it out before adding my next layer of color.

This large background stamp from Altenew is from a collection called, “Pattern Play” . Each one of these stamps can create dynamic yet easy backgrounds. There is the “Diamond“, (that you see today) there is a “Circle” stamp and “Hexagon” stamp. One of my all time favorites stamps for an art piece is this “Mega Succulent“. (You can find two of my Mega Succulent previous posts here & here)

The “Diamond” stamp was stamped two times to make it 10.5 inches long. The paper I used was Arches cold pressed 140 lb and the ink that I stamped with was Spun Sugar distress ink. I gave my misti a rest and used the stamp platform to make the stamping seamless. If you don’t know about the platform … there aren’t sides on the platform it’s easy to stamp in the middle of a large piece of paper. (My paper measures 15.5 x 71/4)

Some of the diamonds were glazed to add more depth and in my video I explain how do do that easily. I decided to only glaze some diamonds for interest instead of all of the diamonds. Once my watercoloring was completely dry I traced around the circles between the diamonds and added small lines at each intersection or the lines coming off of the circles. This extra step was so worth the time. You can see the difference it makes at the top of the paper where the tip of my marker is and compare it to the other dots.

It’s never easy to get a good photo with all these reflections but, hopefully this does the trick. I hope I was able to convince you to create some art for your home.

Prizes: To celebrate this release, Altenew is giving away a $50 gift certificate to SIX lucky winners! Please leave a comment on the Altenew Card Blog and Altenew Scrapbook Blog by 8/15/2018 for a chance to win. Six winners will be announced on the Altenew blogs on 8/19/2018.

NEXT on the hop is the talented Lilith Eeckels !

  73. Karen Page says

    August 9, 2018 at 11:13 pm

I love how this turned out! What a great idea to continue the pattern. I think too literally most of the time and would stick to 6×6 just because that is the size of the stamp. I made some art for my house 12 years ago when we had this one built but haven’t done anything since. I was actually just thinking the other day that I was in the mood for a change as my tastes in crafts and painting are so different now. Guess I have my inspirational kick in the butt now!!!

Genious as an art piece. I have been wanting to play with colors for a few days now, but I am already overloaded with new ideas. Maybe I will combine yours and Kristina’s and do some color mix swatching in a repetitive pattern such as this!!! Thank you so much. This is lovely-beautifully balanced, rich with color and depth.

I really enjoyed watching you go through the coloring process of the diamonds. The watercolors seem to have a life of their own when done in fashion. One at a time, they became vibrantly beautiful! Thank you for the sharing of this technique and inspiration.

Oh my goodness! This is absolutely amazing, Thanks so much for the video! I just had my young teenage grandaughters for a week. They made 10+ 7 1/2 X 11 inch watercolor backgrounds, (mainly washes and drippage) Then wrote inspirational quotes on them. We went to see the new Christopher Robin movie & of course there were a couple of Pooh quotes too.

Kathy, I can see why that beautiful art piece you created would be time consuming. Looks so simple, but… I think it’s cool you still have some of your daughters art on the wall. 🙂
That is one complaint I have about watercolours is that they fade so much. To hear that these have rich pigments is great. I’d love to be able to order them.

You definitely have inspired me! Your art piece is gorgeous. I love to make cards, but I make so many more than I can ever use. The thought of making an art piece never occurred to me, but it would be a perfect way to indulge my paper crafting addiction into something I could hang on the wall.

I watercolored my first piece of wall art while on a river cruise in Germany. One of our excursion choices was to visit an artist in her studio and paint under her guidance. We had a choice of images she had pre-sketched and I chose a type of Kingfisher. You have now inspired me to take a few of my adult childrens’ work from years gone by and frame it for my walls as they have both passed away and it would be great conversation starters with wonderful memories. Bless you! And I love all the art pieces on your wall.
