Day 1. Pop Up w/Video

PopUp_logofinalV3

Hello Dear Friends, Today is DAY ONE of my First Pop Up Challenge!  I really really hope that you enjoy these next four days. Each day I will have a giveaway and hopefully a video too 🙂 At the bottom of today’s post will be the InLinkz tool to upload your card or project. If you are new to the Pop Up Challenge you can read about the details here.

REMINDER … it’s all about lines. Any line of any kind. Just don’t stress and have some fun. Don’t forget if you post your photo with some popcorn  you have a chance at winning a goodie bag in addition to the daily prizes but, the popcorn is just for fun NO requirement 🙂

If you saw yesterdays video in the Pre Pop Up Post todays two cards will make more sense to you. My first card was inspired by a rug that I saw on vacation. On the way home I watercolored my wavy lines on the airplane. It was a little difficult to cut my painting in half to create my card but, I got two cards out of it so it’s a win win.

IMG_0338

For a few years I have enjoyed stacking a sentiment on top of a busy background and still love doing it. The sentiment is from Paper Smooches called, “Thanks 2“and the stitched green boarder die cut is from Pretty Pink Posh. The butterflies are a Martha Stewart punch.

IMG_0345

It’s super relaxing for me to make the little hatch or eyelash lines. Ahhhh I almost forgot this was watercolor paper and I used Zig markers BUT, this sorta thing is great for any marker. I couldn’t film my my process on the plane so I thought it would be fun for my nephew to draw some lines and see what I could do with them. Point being any lines can be colored and turned into a pretty card. I hope you agree and I hope if you doubted yourself you might not now 🙂

IMG_0340

I have a video for this card…and it’s the result of my nephews lines that he drew in the video yesterday.

To watch the video larger or in HD click here.

Ink Blending Solution can be your friend (I use mine all the time) and it’s what I used in the video with my rag. If you wanted to try a smaller bottle this refill is the exact same solution and it’s less money and on sale right now. The Mama Elephant stamp set is called, “Friend Indeed” and the coordinating die cut is called, “Friend Script” and I LOVE the size. You can get 20% off on this divine multiliner Copic set from Simon Says Stamp use the code “COPICB2S” to save on anything Copic (including the blending solution). Such great timing with this challenge and the 30 Day Coloring Challenge in October. (If you don’t have any Copics I would start with something like this.)

TODAY’S GIVEAWAY! Tell me an idea you might have for my next challenge or just say hello lol. I will pick three winners to be announced by next Friday or sooner.

Thanks for your visit today I always am grateful. See you tomorrow! Hugs,Kathy

Such a wonderful idea creating using lines! It’s often the simple things in life that are most inspiring. What about “water” for one of the challenges? Thanks for the chance to win!

I’m think I missunderstood yesterday, I added the pop up logo for popcorn and not actual popcorn. Should I repost?

I would love to see layering for dimension and shadowing using Copic C, W and T markers. I love the pop blue gives things but I would love practice with natural looking shadows.

    Have a great day!

Lines was an excellent choice because no one is limited – everyone can draw lines. Trying to come up with ideas that do not limit anyone from participating will be the challenge. Perhaps something like embellishments – adding interest to whatever image you’re coloring by inking in extra lines and doodles like you did with the paper smooches image on your Father’s Day card. This could be your own stamped image or in your coloring book.

Thanks for these. I actually have some crafting time this weekend so I think I’ll get to play along. How about a Stamped background paper challenge? You know…using smaller stamps to make a patterned paper 🙂

    Thanks again!

  19. Tami B says

    August 14, 2015 at 10:16 am

The cards are wonderful, but I hate that you had to cut the wavy pic. down to card size, it was “wall hanging worthy.”

  20. Crystal D says

    August 14, 2015 at 10:18 am

Love love love these cards and the colors, both amazing! I can’t wait to get home to make something! And now I definitely want some popcorn (I like mine buttery with M&M’s) 🙂

Maybe for the next challenge, you do something along the same line (ha get it), make it about geometric shapes?

  21. SHERRY says

    August 14, 2015 at 10:19 am

Hi Kathy! Lovely cards, as always. One layer card would be AWESOME! Inlaid die cuts would be great too.

Next challenge..maybe a different way to use critter stamps then the normal one to color it and pop it up a card…so to give more ways to use critter stamps.
I stay stuck in the normal way to use them..so to think out side the box…..that is hard for me…

Love this challenge! I’m tempted to drop everything right now and play with lines. Instead I’m going to stay my course and reward myself and my boys later with this challenge.

  28. Tracey Magner says

    August 14, 2015 at 10:29 am

Hi Kathy, My ideas would be to do Christmas cards, or 2nd idea use some kind of markers, like copics or zigs or any kind. 3rd idea, you have to use a stamp on your card, maybe just a word stamp only or a SSS stamp only. Last idea would be a Halloween card since it’s the next holiday coming up and my favorite holiday, lol. Thanks just some ideas.

Hello, friend! I did some lines yesterday as your nephew did, and colored them in. Now I can actually do something with it. Love this challenge.

  37. Julye says

    August 14, 2015 at 10:57 am

Love the cards , I only have small word stamps so now something else for my wish list and am afraid I don’t have copics only promarkers but guess they are similar. Now thanks to your lines I can colour whilst watching tv on an evening and still have the best of both worlds craft and spending time with family.
I would love to learn how you add texture to things with your colouring or those dotty shadows or even how you blend your flower petals anything really its always great to have something to aspire to, Thankyou and will definitely try to play later.

    August 14, 2015 at 11:02 am

Fabulous cards! I’m loving the lines thing and I even bought some popcorn. Only problem is, I’ve eaten half the bag already and not started drawing yet….. Fingers crossed for later! It was a big bag too…..

Your lines card is fabulous – and watching your create is definitely a highlight. Thank you! I’m not very good with colouring so this challenge of yours is a wonderful ‘stretch’ opportunity. For another Pop-Up…Halloween theme (love Halloween cards!), stretching dies/stamps…anything. Only request: please no water-colouring! I just can’t get a handle on it! *grin*

I’m so glad you chose lines for this challenge because we are road tripping this weekend and this will be road trip friendly…already put my sketch pad and sharpie dual tip marker in my purse (trying to pack light so not sure if or which colored markers will make the cut!!) As for the next pop up…circles, stamped background paper, holiday themes (thanksgiving, Christmas), color challenges, supply challenges (stencils, texture paste, die cuts)…

First off, LOVE the wavy painting based on the rug. The colors and soft curves are gorgeous together. I would love to see really, really easy Holiday cards – Calm Christmas! I tend to just make too much work for myself with Xmas cards and would love something simple but still beautiful

  51. Susan G says

Perhaps a challenge could be masculine cards. Masculine cards can be difficult. Just putting tools or golf clubs can seem a bit obvious or slightly lame. I haven’t had the nerve to actually “enter”, but I love seeing your challenges.

Maybe you could show us the different ways that you create texture (in addition to using the rag). Also, to expand on the different ways that you add detail. Thanks so much for sharing all of your techniques!

Love this idea! Can’t wait to try…and love how easy it is for beginners. I actually have a school art project from 50 years ago (my mom saved it!) using shoe polish (!) that looks very similar – I have no idea how I made the black lines back then.

Amazing coloring, as usual. It’s fun to see how people get inspired…for you, it was a rug…for me it was a pattern on a lady’s dress that I saw in my office lobby. I just bought a pack of Peerless Watercolor. I would love to use it for a card challenge. Thank you for the chance to win this fun giveaway.

Hello Kathy! I totally love the look of the Various solution! I’m guessing its better to use deep, saturated colors before coming in with the solution? What if you start with mid-tones? Would it make it pastel or just bleed it out too much? As for another pop up idea, I would suggest circles, hexagons, or arrows cause I love those shapes and they’re all on trend still.

    • Kathy Racoosin says

      August 14, 2015 at 5:18 pm

Experiment. It all depends on the effect you want. Light colors with blending solution look cool too. Try different rags, jeans, sweaters etc. Also use your blender marker to draw patterns or dots over your colored copic base. Hope this inspires you to play. 🙂

Using colored pencils I think would have totally different results. It would be a challenge to get the outlines to pop with definition. The interior of your line shapes could be colored with colored pencil. Next time you’re at your local grocery store or drug store you can pick up a sharpie pen very inexpensively. I hope this helps. 🙂

I forgot to mention in my previous comment, a suggested pop-up challenge. Applying color that creates a mood to give more whallop to a card. Like for a calming sensation, or a happy, exciting celebration, or an anniversary, etc. I think my cards lack the next level of using color to create a mood/feel when the recipient looks at it.

But I don’t have Copic’s so I’ve got to adapt techniques! I’d love to win the die or the stamp set. I just adore word dies especially stand alone ones so you can use them just as you did on this card! Thanks so much for the chance and the Pop-Up challenge…off to work on some lines.

If you want to create texture on watercolor try some kosher salt. Sprinkle over the wet paint and let it dry. Brush off salt and you can leave some on for sparkle. It’s a cool look. The salt absorbs color and leaves a crystal like texture. Have fun. 🙂

Hi, Kathy. I love what you did with your nephew’s line drawings. They are amazing. Was he impressed with how you transformed his doodles? Thanks so much for making the video, but I have to admit.. As soon as I saw the gorgeous card, I knew you’d have that little rag out with your solution. ^_^ I don’t have a rag, but I tried to crochet some mittens once for a friend, and well, the first one didn’t go well.. However, it makes a wonderful texture on copic markers with blender solution. (learned that from you) And, with the opening at the top, I can just put it on my fingers, and move it around easily. Thanks again!! Love the cards.

Hi Kathy. I’ve been doing some research for ideas. What about no-line colouring? A pale ink is used and then you colour in the image giving it a hand drawn effect. No hard black outlines. I’ve seen a pale tan distress ink used as the outline coloured in with Copics. Someone else used a very pale pink. It looks amazing. I don’t own Copics yet. I usually watercolour in my stamps or use pencil crayon and gamsol.

I don’t even know what to suggest for a challenge because I think I’m on a completely different playing field than you are. LOL Which, is all good and exactly why I follow you…
You have such a unique way of looking at things artistically and it intrigues me. Thank you for ALL inspiration that you share and your giveaways.

Great challenge that you’ve popped up! Love the lines! I’m having trouble coming up with an original idea… so I’m thinking adding texture to colored images (hatching, stippling, etc.).
