DAY 1. The Daily Marker 30 Day Coloring Challenge

Hello Friends. Welcome to DAY ONE of the 10th coloring challenge, “The Daily Marker 30 Day Coloring Challenge” OMG I can’t believe it’s DAY ONE!!! YIPEEE!! I am so excited you are here and that so many of you are taking the challenge again! Thank YOU and thank you all for your comments and enthusiasm!

If this is your first time don’t be hard on yourself and jump in when time permits. If you have any questions about the coloring challenge you can refer to this post . If you want to get my posts in your mailbox you can sign up here or subscribe to my videos here.

Often I am aware that not everyone has a nice stash of copic markers or some of you are on the fence about making that kind of investment. Either way there are other alternatives. Believe it or not you can achieve shading & depth on your images with Sharpie markers or Bic markers. The sky is the limit right?

Today’s coloring is with Bic & Sharpie markers. I used one Copic marker to see if how it works with the other brands and the Copic marker was compatible with what I was using for the pink leaves.

Marcella from Power Poppy is such a beautiful illustrator … she defines what an artist is plus she is incredibly inspiring! This new background stamp swoon!

Many of you have asked what paper I use.  I only use 110lb cardstock because I feel it absorbs the color better & I love the feel of a heavier paper. For my ink choice I still enjoy using the tried and true Memento ink when stamping. If your ink pad isn’t stamping dark you might want a refill & it should last you a long time.

Since so many of you have taken the challenge before and for this go round I encourage you to stretch yourself and create some art with your coloring. Use a beautiful background stamp, a coloring book page or stamp a bunch of flowers to create a background like I did in this post. Even if it’s takes a week you will be happy to see your art come together before your eyes.  A trip to the store for some inexpensive frames gives your work even more importance.  Adding art like this would be great on a collage wall or on a book shelf etc. You get the idea lol. (this is the frame I used)

(By the way I am giving this away more on that later)

This background stamp is called, “Big Sexy Leaves” and it’s oh so fun to color. The smaller blue leaves and the center pink/orange leaves were altered and in the video you can see how I did that.

Since this is the first day I want to make mention of something that I think is very important … our posture! When coloring take pause and think if you can lift your gaze and straighten you back. Using a clip board helps you prop up your project so you aren’t bending over. If you want something for your desk I found this on eBay many years ago now I just need to remember to pull it out.

GIVEAWAY!! I thought it might be nice to give away my framed “Big Sexy Leaves” and if you are interested all you need to do is leave a comment on this blog post. I will be having many giveaways this month. The first weeks giveaways will be announced on Sunday the 10th.

On to coloring and I can not wait to see what you all are coloring. Woo Hoo!!

There are 3 ways to share what you are coloring. If you want to join a community of coloring enthusiasts I recommend  FaceBook or Instagram. Be sure to tag me and use the hashtag #thedailymarker30day. Kids & young adults use #thedailymarker30daykids.

The 3rd way is to link up to my blog to share your coloring. It will always be on todays post…DAY 1. each day I will link you back here to share your coloring.

*** The link up tool is at the very bottom of this post. ***

Thanks for your enthusiasm for the challenge and I hope you know that I am just as excited as you are. Thanks for your visit and I will see you tomorrow  Hugs, Kathy

P.S. If you want to share the logo (at the top of the post) when writing your blog post or on Facebook etc. that would be lovely & so appreciated :).

Just watched the video… Loved it and the image. Great first project and great idea to color sections of a bigger project. I created a couple of scene card fronts to color during my lunch hour for the challenge.

    • Kathy Racoosin says

      June 1, 2018 at 10:42 am

Sounds like you are ready Mary woo hoo and thanks for the sweet compliment. 🙂

  7. Enna says

    June 1, 2018 at 4:21 am

    So fun!!
PowerPoppy stamps are sometimes really intimidating, since they seem to have so much detail at first glance; however, if you break it up, as you said, it is doable. You make it look so easy! I am going to work on some of my more detailed background stamps, which, up until now, have been relegated to some kind of heat embossing over an ink blending or watercolor technique.
    Thanks for the inspiration!

    • Kathy Racoosin says

      June 1, 2018 at 10:44 am

Hi Enna I am glad I gave you a nudge. Can you believe I never heat emboss when coloring I feel like it’s restricting. 🙂 and oh thank Y OU!

Oh Ishani I hope it works for you. It’s amazing how taking a little you time is good for your soul. Any medium is perfect. 🙂

  13. Sarah says

    June 1, 2018 at 6:55 am

I’ve been thinking about making art pieces instead of cards recently – my card stash is so big, I really don’t need to make any more “just in case” cards! I shall be joining in with the challenge again, though I’m going to try using some of my lesser used mediums as well as my trusty Copics this time.

    • Kathy Racoosin says

      June 1, 2018 at 10:50 am

Yay Sarah! We are on the same page about art pieces! I am glad you know any medium is wonderful 🙂

  17. MelissaF says

    June 1, 2018 at 7:51 am

Such a beautiful work of colorful art! I love Power Poppy stamps but I get intimidated when I see all those details to color, eek! I love your idea of working on the same piece a bit each day. Thanks for another awesome video and your continued crafty and colorful inspiration.

    • Kathy Racoosin says

      June 1, 2018 at 10:53 am

Hi Melissa, The details in the image are like a guide and I believe make it easier to color. Maybe start with a digital image first? Thanks for the compliments 🙂

  18. Michele F says

    June 1, 2018 at 8:41 am

Kathy I think it’s amazing what you can do with Sharpies, and the least expensive little marker [who cares what ink they hold!]

Just watched your video. I may give this challenge a try. I color some, but not everyday. I am going to look into creating a large piece that could be framed. Great idea! Your leaves are very pretty. Off to look at Sharpies today. They could be fun and fill a gap in my colors.

    • Kathy Racoosin says

      June 1, 2018 at 10:55 am

Thanks for the compliments Lisa and for watching the video. Give it a try you can’t loose anything … it’s only a gain in my book and you can color when it works for you. 🙂

I was so excited and prepared for my first try at this challenge, oh happy 10 th birthday . BUT my osteoarthritis in my spine did a few funny things and I ended up in hospital with two bulging discs to add to my condition. So I’m making a very gentle start to this and hoping like mad I get less pain so I can really give it a push as I’ve looked forward to this since last time I watched you. Your image was amazing, you make it look so easy and you put me at ease that I don’t have a huge collected of anything. Please put me into the chance to win your work. Off to try something and wishing everyone the best x

Thanks also for discussing posture, as a PT I think that is extremely important! I often sit in my recliner with my clipboard on my knees while I’m relaxing and coloring.

Love these big leaves from marci…need to break out some of my purchases from the Power Poppy road show event!

Yes, finally whe started, …..let the fun begin( LOL)! I had so much plans for this challenge but I have overloading my wrist, don’t ask how I don’t know. So I may colour a very short while each day and I started already on a gorgeous image. I will post my “work in progress”.
Because I am colouring with my pencils it takes longer than with markers, ink or paint and I recognized the tip of the clipboard right away I put a folded towel underneath when colouring on my desk, so I can colour in each angel I want by folding or unfolding the towel.
Your image is a great stamp and I love the bright colours you used.
    Thanks Kathy and until tomorrow.

I love watching you color! I don’t know how much I can actually finish this time, but I do know I will need to take some time to chill with my watercolors or my watercolor pencils. We are trying to get two houses fixed up to sell and then find something to buy that will work to combine households or at least be closer together. It’s been pushing me to the limit, and I also have been dealing with health issues. So…even a small project, or a piece of one, is a great stress reducer. And…it makes me feel productive when I have to stop working to rest. I am looking forward to the inspiration and the fun of the next month! Thank you.

Kathy- Yay! I’m so excited the challenge is on! Congratulations on the 10th one, and thank you for encouraging and inspiring us all, year after year. I recently re-introduced coloring to my 20-year old daughter – young, new, single mom, with stresses to correspond- as a way she can relax, unwind, and tap her creative side after my grandson’s asleep. We’ve managed to have several color and chat sessions together, which has helped us, too. And now, tonite, I introduced her to the challenge! She’s as inspired as I always am, and I look forward to regular “color-time” with her over the course of the challenge (and hopefully beyond). Thanks so much for sharing your many talents and thoughtfulness in realizing we aren’t all able to buy a big stash of copics. I so appreciate the message of working with what you have (on many levels) and knowing you can still create beautiful things. Hugs and appreciation being sent your way.

Kathy, I am trying to make a comment but it says it is a duplicate. I don’t see it above so I am confused. Anyway, I love that you used Sharpies for this bold and vibrant piece! It takes a lot of stress off me. Plus the way you just make up things as you feel like it, puts me at ease as well. I will give the 30 Day Challenge a try! kReN

I love coloring and picked it back up while I was out of work from multiple surgeries!
I return to work as a clinical nurse specialist & ended up being exposed to black mold
and lost my immune system & on reverse isolation only leave my home for Dr. appt. hosp./surgery. I was bored started crafting/coloring to relax. I’ve watch your challenges video and want to congratulate you on your 10th! I’ve just watch your new video and love that you say to relax & straighten up your posture use a clip board and you don’t have to have copic markers and not to worry if you don’t shade the correct place on the big sexy leaves and that you color!! I look forward to reviewing your 30 day challenge to color each day. I wish you well & want to say, Thank you for sharing your knowledge and generous giveaways!!

i literally *just bought* an entire set of Spectrum Noir markers on sale at the first ever AC Moore i’ve been to. they’re not copics, but maybe over a month I can learn to color with them. It’s the challenge anyway!!
i am a pencil lover – i have prismacolors, spectracolors (remember those? yes, drool now), crayolas, and everything in between. alcohol markers are NOT colored pencils and everything i know about blending is NOT Happening LOL
well, it’s good to learn new things.
