Day 20. Simply Colored

Hello Friends, How was your weekend? Today I am up on the Power Poppy blog for another guest post for “Inspire Me Monday” .
The great thing about a coloring challenge is it’s more about coloring than card making. It’s nice to have permission to not make a card and just color for the pure joy of it. For my project today I thought I would share some easy and relaxing watercoloring with distress inks.
When you love every image in a stamp set like this “Succulent Singles” it’s fun to use most of the stamps in the set by creating fun backgrounds.
For this background I arranged the stamps in the center of the misti and rotated my card so I didn’t have to keep moving the stamps. I was thrilled that my paper hanging off the edge worked. Whew!
My favorite backgrounds are one single image in a vertical row. In case you are wondering what ink I used … let’s just say next time I will use distress ink to stamp my images.
Time only permitted to paint two of the backgrounds. I taped them off with some 3m painters tape because I wanted a boarder of white along the edges plus the tape holds them in place.
I painted stripes in two shades of purple distress ink with a broad brush FIRST. Once the stripes were dry I painted with a variety of green distress ink on the succulents. It was nice to have a colorful background and not worry about painting around the images.
The parts of the succulents that had purple from the stripes were easy to paint over and gave the images more of a color range.

When everything was dry I used some glossy accents to glue them down on some green cardstock. (after glueing I pop the panel in a book so it will dry super flat)

The sentiment is from this beautiful stamp set called, “Loving Tulips” & I stamped the large hello with some black ink.

I hope you give this technique a try … it’s fun to try something different and it’s great not to spend a lot of time painting a background. Thanks for your visit today see you tomorrow. Hugs, Kathy

Beautiful watercoloring. I like the idea of laying down the background first. It looks fabulous!

Hi Kathy! Wow, Day 20 already!! Love what you said about the pure joy of coloring!
Love these cards…and the stamp set greeting of “what’s up succa” is hilarious! I would love to see that card when you finish it! Today’s cards are awesome, the purples with the green plants are just perfect! Wow are you good at making stripes. I thought you jsed a stencil! Did you use distress ink to stamp the succulents? They look so crisp!

I recommend that you use Distress Inks, and maybe a stamp positioner, like the Misti (if your worried about it not being super crisp on the first stamping) . I hope you try this technique. Thanks for your sweet comments!!! 🙂

These look so modern and fresh! I’ll have to give this a try. I was trying to use a Molotow pen over the weekend and it kept absorbing into the paper! Argh !

    • Kathy Racoosin says

      March 20, 2017 at 1:48 pm

Thats a bummer Bunny. Try using a different type of paper. I have heard that some papers it will work well with and others it will tear and absorb. I do not know which papers are best, however keep trying with whatever you have.

Great idea doing the background stripes and then color in the images and using part of that color for your image but changing it up a bit so it’s not background. I have just started making my own background with stamps and love the idea and interest it gives.

Thanks for all the tips — masking off a border, using a stamp positioner as you did, the types of inks that would have been your first choice (though these look great to me)…. The finished panel is so soft looking. It’s almost as if you put lightweight vellum over it.

I like the statement that it is more about the coloring and the rest about the card making. I have been coloring but have not posted it because it has been more about ME coloring and less about the whole sharing. It has been relaxing and I know that I can post whatever I create with the image later!! Thank you for all your inspiration!! I LOVE these fun succulents and the watercolor stripes. I need to try making stripes next with watercolor.

How creative, I wouldn’t think to let the purple run through the flowers and then paint over it. I would painstakingly cut masks or use drawing gum and do the stripes over it! What a great time saver and a lovely way to add more colour into the flowers themselves. So pretty Kathy 🙂
