Easy Watercoloring with Tombow Watercolor Markers

Hellloooo Friends!! How are you? I am back and super excited to be a guest on the WPlus 9 blog today. Dawn, the owner is a mind blowing artist who I have so much respect and admiration for .. not only is she so talented but, kind, beautiful and has the best laugh.

I am inking up Dawn’s Modern Cala Lily today and watercoloring with the coordinating die cut.

Notice the twine … I just ordered two from SSS so I don’t get this low again.

After stamping the images with Scattered Straw distress ink I colored the edges of the stamp with some Tombow markers then stamped again. The watercolor paper that I am using is this… love that it’s bright white.

Scribble the markers on a palette or a craft mat and pick up the color with a wet paint brush then when dry…. get out your 0.03!

Can you see the difference that that teeny tiny line adds? I can say it over and over again but, this super fine tip marker … 0.03 … is the one marker that everyone needs.

The background was stamped with Squeezed Lemonade and the rest was painted with Scattered Straw super easy and relaxing.

Heavy weight vellum was added to soften the background and twine was colored and tied around one of the lilies.
On another note there are only a few spots left for my Road Trip to Hero Arts. Let me know if you want to attend and there wasn’t a spot.
I will be back on Friday so see you then. Thanks for your visit and a big thanks to WPlus9 and Dawn for having me. Hugs, Kathy

Hi Kathy! I just loved watching these beautiful Callas come to life! [yes, you do get a bonus for knowing their name!] I asked a question about water coloring with the original Distress Inks vs the Oxides … I haven’t had the same results. Wondering if you have tried them, and which you prefer?
Thanks, for sharing your talents with us!

Hi Michele! Thanks for your kindness, as always. Honestly I have been afraid to try the oxides as watercolors!! LOL- I know I love the distress inks so I just stick with what I know works!!! Hehehe

Absolutely stunning! Those flowers looked intimidating to me, until I saw how you colored them. I was wondering, were you using a Silver Brush Co. brush? And if so, what size? The brush seemed to have little movement in the brissels, I’m wondering if that would help me. I’m TIRED of buying brushes and not having success… seems like more and more are converting over to the SBC ones. TFS! 🙂

Why thank you, Nancy. Yes I was using a black velvet watercolor brush from Silver company. I honestly cannot remember the exact brush I was using but I believe it was a #4 round. I do like these brushes as they hold a lot of water and pigment in the bristles when coloring. Any small sized round brush would do the trick though. I hope that’s helpful!

You have outdone yourself Kathy! This card is so gorgeous, with the soft coloring, the beautiful background! I love calla Lilly stamp set, it is so gorgeous. You inspire me lady, I’ve been practicing with Tombow markers lately, I need to try using a brush instead of just coloring directly with them, I love the effect you got using them this way. I can’t wait to hear when you are coming to Arizona again, I’m hoping to be able to attend again, it’s such a wonderful day coloring with you.

The colours are exqusite, Kathy. the flowers could almost hop off the page and into a vase filled with water. I never tire of watching you colour, your comments and tips.

That is so lovely! And I like your detailed information on how to do it. I confess I’ve never used any kind of markers as watercolor. It has always intimidated me. But, I guess it doesn’t hurt to try, right?

      May 3, 2018 at 6:43 pm

Absolutely, Robin! Experimenting is always fun! If you do try and like it please tag me on Instagram so I can see your work! Happy coloring!

I love how this card came out! The flowers look so real like they could jump off of the page and your coloring is spectacular as usual. I have some Tombow markers and I don’t use them very often. I have to use mine more. I just won some Tombow markers from Altenew and I have a choice of which ones to get. A 10 pack or a 12 pack. I think the 12 pack is dual colors or something like that. I don’t know which ones to get. I can’t wait for the next coloring challenge! I’ve been coloring a lot. I just made a colorful card for the Queen of England whose birthday is April 21, the same birthday as mine! However, I will be 64 like the Beatle song and she won’t. I don’t want to be 64, I’d like to be 34 again because my dad was still alive and my mom wasn’t 90 like she is now. Hey, if anyone wants to send a handmade card, I will accept any and all cards! LOL
Thanks for showing us your great card and telling us how you did it.

Beautiful. The vellum really softens the background with out taking away from it. The flowers are beautiful.

Thanks for your gorgeous watercolouring, love it when you explain how and why you do something in your video. To answer your question: I can’t remember when I watercoloured and die cut it. If I would I think I should colour first and then die cutting.
