Pretty Pink Posh’s Watercolor Hop fit perfect for my 30 Day Coloring Challenge and it was such an honor to be invited. I was hoping to wow you with a video (fingers crossed) and two cards.

IMG_5230

It was so fun to create this jumbo butterfly card using some embossing powder and these watercolors. Did you happen to catch my shaped butterfly card using the same stamp? Click here to see it. Here’s a little snap shot of my shaped butterfly card.

IMG_5258Yes I love this butterfly lol.

The videos are divided up in 2 parts again. PART 1. is the background. PART 2. is the butterfly.

Watch Part 1. in HD here. Watch Part 2. in HD here.

I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU… do you like the videos divided up so they are short?
IMG_5228

I wanted to make a similar card with black ink instead of clear embossing power. The color moves differently on the paper w/ the black ink versus the embossed image. The embossing keeps the water colors more contained. If I want a quick bold sentiment I always reach for Paper Smooches, Bold Buzz Words.

IMG_5227

Bold or more pastel-ish? I love what the large “Hello” does for my cards and it suits any occasion.

Off topic I just have to say WOW so many of you are blazing on Instagram and I am enjoying all of the uploads on my blog. You guys are inspiring me and thank YOU! Go here to read more about the 30 Day Coloring Challenge and if you want to share what your creating go to Day 1 and scroll to the bottom of the post. You will find a blue Inlinkz tab to link up your coloring.

IMG_5233

Die cutting several layers is so worth the effort in my book and it enhances the card with more of a focal interest? What do you think? That’s it for today. See you tomorrow and thanks for your visit. Hugs, Kathy

I just love to see you work your magic, Kathy. I know you’re not a water colouring specialist, but to me the results are pretty awesome. I tried a little water colouring 2 days ago, but didn’t like the outcome, so I guess I need to practice a little more. Dividing up your videos works for me. It’s also nice to be able to come back and have another look at a particular stage of the card creation.

      Marianne,
Thank you so much for your feedback regarding the videos being divided. Keep practicing and magic will come your way. Try different amounts of water with your watercolors and see if that helps.
      Thanks 🙂

  26. Sarah Jay says

    June 4, 2015 at 2:15 pm

What an awesome image to color! And beautifully done, both ways.

I have to confess, I don’t often watch videos because too many drag on so long that I find my mind wandering instead of absorbing the material. That said, I can watch a video about a technique I really want to learn. But I would be more likely to watch shorter videos that focus on a single technique from a larger project. Or videos that speed through the more basic aspects of a project so there is more time to dedicate to the complicated or novel parts.

Beautiful butterfly card Kathy! I do like when you split up the video’s, I always seem to have limited time, so I can see the parts I need to see most and find it easier. I do have a question–I have the Grumbacher transparent and Opaque watercolor sets, but have been interested also in the one you used today, the Kuretake one. Being an economical crafter, and not doing this as my “job”, would you recommend the Kuretake? Are the colors that much more vibrant or different that it would be good to use that one for certain projects? I have distress inks, also a few gelato’s crayons, which are good for heavier applications, not delicate water color stuff. I value your opinion! I’m also enjoying the comments you’ve given me on my coloring I’ve sent you on instagram, thanks so much for motivating all of us!

Another beautiful card from you and time to get my watercolours going. Been copicing too much lately. A little piece of interest on the butterfly.
The butterfly for us holds a very special place, it is used as an inspiration here within the Deaf community. The butterfly is also deaf and a beautiful creature that all admire.

You most definitely ARE an artist! I spent my whole life thinking I had zero artistic ability because I couldn’t draw a reasonable image of anything. Don’t limit yourself, and don’t wait until you are 60 to discover what’s inside you just waiting to come out! Yes, I am in awe of the “masters”, but I am also in awe of someone who can color like you do. You are an inspiration, and helping me discover for myself that (while I cannot draw worth doodly-squat) I DO love to color! It brings me such joy to play and have a result that I like. And…at the tender age of 65, I made my mom some refrigerator art for mothers’ day. And I made a matching magnet. And I had a ton of fun doing it!!!

I love how you showed the stamping with an embossed image and then with an image stamped in black. I also like to stamp an image in liquid platinum embossing powder. It gives a unique effect on an image. I first learned to watercolor an image with Tombow watercolor markers. They are very vibrant. My teacher showed us to layer the markers and then use water to mix the colors on the watercolor paper. I just love your explanations. Thanks so much.

  130. Ruth G says

Really beautiful! I love to work with an embossed image, but I love the look of the black since so many butterflies have black margins – maybe I need to heat emboss with black?
I think the two videos is an awesome idea – worked well. I could decide if I wanted to see the background or just the butterflies and I appreciate having that choice (I chose to watch both!) I also love that you speed up and also didn’t include the part when you were die cutting. It was great that your focus was on the beautiful watercoloring (and I appreciate seeing how you work with those watercolors since I have gotten them and have yet to use them)!
Sorry for the epic comment! I appreciate all you share!!!

Don’t ever put yourself down about not being an “artist”! Even though you may not draw the images you stamp yourself, you use the tools you have at hand to create beautiful things. That is MY definition of art! Thanks so much for sharing your creations! ~ Andrea

You are far from being “just a crafter.” I’m behind on your 30-day color challenge, but had to take time to look at this. I thought I was so over the butterfly craze that seems to have been going on forever UNTIL I saw yours. Absolutely stunning! I really like the way you die cut your sentiment right out of the image and gave it some prominence by giving it some height. I like the longer technique videos split into 2 so I can more readily find where I need to return for extra learning. You’re an artist, a teacher and a colorist–and you do them all well.

I loved watching the videos, Kathy. I know what you mean about not being an “artist”. I feel the same way. But our creations are still works of art and yours are beautiful.

I love the large ‘hello’ too! I really need to give that technique a try- I admire it every time I see it. It looks fantastic ‘supersized’!

I repeat an earlier comment I made, you are one of the best colorists I’ve ever seen. I love watching your videos and the magic you make. I like the shorter videos, because you can watch the segment you’re most interested in repeatedly (I speak from experience). Keep up the great inspiration. Thanks for your blog.
