Color Smashing Blog Hop & Giveaway

Hello Friends, How are you? Seriously I am missing you all and I can’t help but, hope that it’s mutual. I am super excited today to be part of Altenew Anniversary Blog Hop. Happy Third Birthday Altenew!! WOO HOO!  To start at the beginning of the hop go to the Altenew blog here. If you are coming from Lilith Eeckels blog you are in the right place.

Sometimes I don’t have the time to invest in super detailed coloring so I let my markers do the work. I like to call this technique “Color Smashing” Both cards today I colored smashed.

My… take a nap in the garden … party card … was soooo fun to make … just a little masking with these beautiful layering flowers called, “Garden Treasure” . I combined the flowers with these fun lil and totally adorable guys .. the stamp set is called, “Hug Me” . I fussy cut the center guy & popped him on my card with some foam tape and that made me realize I could whip up more of these if I had the coordinating dies on hand.

It took me days to get these balloons to look this way lol. The yellow, red & pink balloons I applied glossy accents on them and let the glossy dry over night. The next day I would reapply and the third day… repeat. For the green and blue I added only one coat of glossy when the other balloons were dry. I wanted three of the balloons to stand out. They are rich and thick and wonderful. I backed the cluster of balloons with foam tape and added them to my card front.

I also added glossy accents to the noses that are tied to their sweet faces. Copic blending solution was added the the fellas and to the grass with that rag technique I use all the time.

The card was finished after adding some white gel pen accents and some of Lucy’s sequins.

For this card … had sooo many technical difficulties and ended up deleting some video just so I could upload it.

Love the simplicity of this layering stamp called, “Best Mom” but, I didn’t have the matching die so I fussy cut it and in the video I will show you some tips on that and how I colored the background.

The blossom was stamped four times with some grey memento ink (copic friendly) on to some 110lb neenah cardstock. The rest you will have to see the video lol.

I mentioned that this is a layering stamp set but, I was craving coloring so that’s what I did. Love how layering stamp sets are for everyone.

    Gorgeous as always Kathy!!
I was coloring in a coloring book the other day, some big, beautiful lillies, and I caught myself thinking, “Kathy would leave part of it white, the sweet spot…” but then I got so caught up in it, I realized that I’m not sure I know where to leave that white space. Would it be where the light is hitting get the object directly? Is there an easy way to figure this out? I would love it if you would do a little lesson on that at some point. ☺

    • Kathy Racoosin says

      April 15, 2017 at 7:16 pm

Yes, Nicole. You are right. The white/lightest highlight AKA sweet spot is directly where the light would hit the object. Where the sweet spot is located depends on where you want your directional light to come from. For example, the light can come from the top right side or left side of your image. Or is the light directly on top of the image? Choosing one light source direction and using it throughout your whole composition is generally what crafters and artists do. You can search for ‘directional lighting in coloring’ on YouTube and many tutorials should pop up. I know Kristina Werner did one fairly recently. Hope that is helpful and makes sense! LOL thanks for your sweet comments.

Hi Candy and thank you! I like to use any old terry cloth rag. One with texture in the cloth, such as an old face cloth or hand towel. I know some people have even used textured paper towels but I think a nubby rag yields better results. Hope that helps!

Beautiful cards, Kathy!! Thank you for showing us, that we don’t HAVE to have all the inks to do layering stamps, and it’s ok to just color with what we have! It’s always great to see alternative sources other than what was originally intended!

Kathy, I am, as usual, blown away with your card designs and your amazing coloring! I love the second card in particular – maybe because I have this set?!?! Beautiful design! I love the vellum to soften the background coloring and stamping. Of course, your coloring of the sprig of flowers is so wonderful. You inspire me to practice in hope that my coloring will at some point as great as yours. I always forget the white gel pen for those final touches. Thank for all that you do. As I went through the comments I was impressed that you took the time to respond on so many! You are a very special, thoughtful lady! Thank you so much for all that, especially sharing your extraordinary talent and creativity!

Kathy your card is beautiful. They way you use the color “smashing” technique makes the colors blend into a beautifully unique result. I just started coloring with copies so I can’t wait to try this effect. I know it won’t be as beautiful as yours but I’ll give it a try. You are very inspiring. Thank you for sharing.
